Festivities


5th January

The Wise Man parade inaugurate the annual festivities. It is a great event that attracts above all the children, because these giants are very spectacular.


February

The carnival in Barcelona is another important event. For many days there are costume parades, parties and fireworks. The carnival is very nice also in Sitges, a village near Barcelona.


3rd March

The Sant Medir Festival takes place at Gràcia with a great parade and the famous sweets distribution to the public.


23rd April

This day, called Sant Jordi day, is also known like books and roses day. During this event there are many stalls along the streets, in front of the homes and the libraries. It is both a commercial and cultural event that involves Barcelona and the near cities.


May

On May the Catalans celebrate the Jocs Florals (flowers games) and the the Sant Ponc festival in Calle del Hospital.


June

On June you can’t miss the big event called Feast-God or Saint Sacrament feast, with giants parades. You can see the jets of the font decorated by flowers.


Night between 23rd and 24th June

It is the Verbena de Sant Joan. The inhabitants of Barcelona organize nights with dances and fireworks. This night is also called the Fire Night (Nit del Foc). According to the tradition, the day after you have to go to the beach to see the dawn after having celebrate all the night long and having pass the night on the beach around a fire, popping multicolour bangers.


End of June

On the end of June carries out the Grec festival. It is a festival based on the theatre, the dance and the open air music (because on summer many theatres are closed). The shows go on in the whole city. You can’t miss the shows at the Montjuïc amphitheatre, that gives the name at the festival.


15th August

In the festivity of the Ascension there is one of the bigger event of Barcellona. The inhabitants of Gràcia decorate the streets according to a specify theme . The celebrations go on a week and during this period all the squares and the city’s corners are animated by orchestras.


11th September

The Nation Catalan Feast carries out on 11th September. It is a melancholic day because the tradition wants that it puts down coronas in memory of the National heroes and to commemorate the capture of Barcelona by the Spanish troupes at the end of the Secession war, in 1714.


24th September

Is the Mercè Feast. Probably is the bigger feast in Barcelona and carries out on honour of its patron, Mercè. There are four days of intense celebrations, parades, fireworks, theatre shows and open air dances. It begins after the official date that decrees the end of the summer to inaugurate the future winter celebrations. You can also admire the Sardine’s representations.


13th December

During the Christmas period, there is the cribs’ exhibition. If you are in Barcelona in December, have to visit the craft markets behind the Cathedral and the Christmas market in the square.


31st December

In Barcelona the Saint Sylvester Day looks like the carnival. Everywhere in the streets the people wears masks and, according to the tradition, eats the grapes at each clock strike. This is a tradition that is considered good omen for the new year.
