The Sardane

Is the first Catalan tradition. The Sardane is a National Catalan dance, original from the Empordà region , in north Catalonia. It is a simple dance, interpreted by the different generations. To see the exhibition of Sardane you have to go in front of the Cathedral.


The Castellers

There is a Catalan tradition that needs balance and solidarity: the Castellers. It consists in building high human pyramids in the water . Nowadays there are 58 teams of castellers that are century years old, like the famous Colla Vella. The tradition idea is building a “pinya”, a sort of compact crowd made by the inhabitants of the village and then, over this base, standing a tree or four flat human castle; on the top, normally, there is a baby. The bilingualism

First the Catalan is a language. This language has Latin origins like the French, the Spanish and the Italian. The Catalan has developed and it is teached obligatory in the schools. There aren’t road signs and indications in Castilian on the maps and about the 95 % of the regional inhabitants understand the Catalan and about the 70 % can speak it.
